Should you drive a petrol vehicle or one of the new electric cars on the market? That’s the question many of us ask ourselves when it’s time to visit a dealership or research a new vehicle online. Unless strict regulations in your state limit you, this question should continue to be prevalent for a few more years. What are the trade-offs between gasoline cars and electric cars?
Electric cars have a higher upfront cost than gasoline-powered vehicles

The lack of electric charging stations in most areas means that you need to install a home charger to power your electric vehicle. You won’t have to do that with a gas-powered vehicle; you can find a gas station everywhere you go.
Some car manufacturers offer free installation of an electric charger, but this requires that you have a socket to support the charger. This means installing a separate 240 volt outlet, which requires an electrician.
Gas-powered cars require more frequent maintenance than electric vehicles
There are far fewer components and parts in electric vehicles than in gas-powered vehicles. This means less maintenance is required. Gas-powered cars require frequent oil and fluid changes. Electric cars generally last longer than gas-powered models due to less wear on parts.
Range and towing are not an issue with gas-powered vehicles
Although electric trucks can tow a heavy load, towing significantly reduces the range of an electric vehicle. Every electric vehicle has a limited range. While gas-powered cars can only go as far as a tank of gas will allow, it only takes a few minutes to fill them with fuel.
Most EVs now have a fast charging process that can quickly give you more range, but that extra range doesn’t compare to what you find in a gas-powered car. For this reason, range remains problematic for electric cars.
Which type of car offers faster acceleration?
Once we got past the idea that EVs had to be shaped like the Nissan Leaf, we realized that using electricity could deliver incredible acceleration. The Tesla Model S showed us that the maximum level of torque is available as soon as you start driving.
In a gasoline-powered vehicle, you have to shift gears to reach the maximum torque level, which can take time. When paired, an electric vehicle will accelerate much faster than a gas-powered car every time.
Does it cost less to charge an EV than to fill up with gas?
Yes, it costs a lot less to charge an EV than to refuel. Time highlighted this fact which showed that the cost of refueling a Tesla Model Y for a month costs a driver $62, which is less than what some of us spend on a full tank of gas.
Has the purchase of an electric vehicle become an impulse based on high gas prices?
In many ways, yes, buying electric cars has become an impulse buy based on higher gas prices. Although with inflation we become accustomed to paying more for goods and services, gasoline prices may cause some consumers to seek alternatives. Over time, the desire for electric cars in response to rising gas prices dissipates.

One of the biggest challenges to buying electric cars right now is the availability of these vehicles. You can easily find many gasoline vehicles at dealerships in your city. Because electric vehicles are relatively new, there aren’t as many available for purchase.
Automotive industry supply chain issues continue to create bottlenecks when ordering and purchasing electric cars. Impulse buyers may turn away and seek out hybrid cars or efficient gas-powered vehicles if electric vehicles are unavailable.
